A series of novels by Jim Butcher.  To my understanding - supposedly these books sprang from a debate over what was better in a story, great character development or a unique story idea.  Jim Butcher asked for two known story ideas and he said he would make an interesting story out of them using character development.

1) Furies of Calderon
2) Academ's Fury
3) Cursor's Fury
4) Captain's Fury
5) Princep's Fury
6) First Lord's Fury
For my son, hero in training.
And in memory of my father, a hero in truth.
The course of history is determined not by battles, by sieges, or usurpations, but by the actions of the individual.

In this extraordinary fantasy epic, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher, leads readers into a world where the fate of the Realm rests on the shoulders of a boy with no power to call his own...

For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggresive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bonds with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal.  But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting.  At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps.  Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat horde - returns to the Valley, Tavi's courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war...

"A stay-up-all-night-'til-you-finish-it book, Furies of Calderon is a marvelous read." - Patricia Briggs, #1 New York Time bestselling author of Dead Heat

"A fascinating world and magic system... the start of a promising series." - Locus

"Filled with plot twists and white-knuckle suspense, this is a ripping good yarn that delivers terrific magic and nonstop action." - Deborah Chester, national bestselling author of The Crown

I love the Dresden Files and this was the first book of another series by Butcher - and it was complete.  I had to pick them up.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
